The Settings window
Everything you can tune in Mnemosyne OS lives in one window, with a rail of sections on its right. This section of the guide has one page per rail entry. This first page is about the window itself.
Opening it
- Ctrl+, from anywhere (see Shortcuts).
- The Settings entry in the tools group at the end of the dock, past the separating line.
The window opens on Profile. Every page saves as you change it; there is no Save button anywhere in Settings.
The rail
Sections are ordered by hand, not by age: who you are, then how it looks, then what it runs on, then the engine, then the rules.

The / button at the head of the rail collapses it to icons only (Collapse panel / Expand panel); collapsed, each icon explains itself on hover. The icons follow the icon pack chosen in Appearance. When the window is opened as a full-screen panel, a ← button closes it.
Initial Setup
This entry sits just under Profile, wears an orange badge with a count, and exists only while onboarding steps you skipped are still pending. The page, Complete your setup, says: You skipped some steps during the initial setup. Configure them now or dismiss them permanently.
Each pending step is a row marked Skipped during onboarding, with:
- Configure →, which jumps to the page that owns the step: the AI provider step opens AI & Models, the embedding and spines steps open Vaults. Steps of other kinds carry no Configure button.
- ✓ Dismiss (Mark as done without configuring). Dismissal is permanent.
Once the list is empty the page reads All done. No pending setup steps. and the rail entry disappears. A footer reminds you that These settings remain accessible in Settings → Intelligence / Vaults. (the app names the AI page that way in this note).
Reset
The red entry pinned at the bottom of the rail opens a page with two very different actions. Read which one you are on.
Return to setup
Return to the initial setup of Mnemosyne OS. The card What this does lists three points: it takes you back to the initial setup wizard, lets you reconfigure your identity, AI models, language and tracked vaults, and closes the current workspace to restart the guided setup. A blue line states the important part: ✓ Your vaults, memories and notes are NOT deleted. Nothing is erased — only the setup flow is shown again.
Return to setup… asks Return to setup? (You'll leave the current workspace and go back to the initial setup wizard. Your data stays intact — you can reconfigure and come straight back.) with Cancel / Return to setup.
Erase everything (factory reset)
Global clean-up — wipes all Mnemosyne OS data and restarts the app. Under This permanently deletes:
- Your profile, settings and appearance (theme, dock, icon pack).
- All memories and vault indexes — the local databases.
- Conversations, layouts and installed cartridges.
Your real document files on disk are kept — only Mnemosyne OS's own data is erased. And in red: This cannot be undone.
The button Erase everything & restart stays disabled until you type the word shown after Type this word to confirm:, which is ERASE on an English interface (case does not matter). There is no second dialog: the button reads Erasing — the app will restart… and the app relaunches empty.
Your sovereign wallet key and your Engramm license material are "Mnemosyne OS's own data", so the wipe erases them too. The page does not say it. Before erasing, make a backup that includes the wallet, as described on Backup & Restore.
